(Part of the not-so-simple socks for babies series)

I’ve decided to post a number of patterns I’ve created for baby socks that aren’t just toe up/cuff down stocking stitch as I’ve realised that there’s something rather marvellous about creating a really tiny pair of socks with an exquisitely complex pattern. It gives you the chance to experiment with cable, lace and colourwork on something you can finish really quickly. Also, because you don’t have to worry about ‘wear and tear’, you can be less concerned about hardy heel flaps and instead continue your pattern into the heel

The first pair for the blog are the Diamond Twists – a very sweet cable pattern

These are cuff down and after a twisted rib cuff, have two panels of 12 cable stitches on the leg part, one of which continues just down to the heel (and is knit flat at this point), while the other finishes at the toes. There is a rib panel between the two cable panels

Using 2.5 mm DPNs and 4 ply/sock yarn

Abbreviations
tbl –
Knit through the back loop
k2tog – knit 2 sts together
p2tog – purl 2 sts together
ssk – slip 2 sts, knit into back of these
Cable abbs for in the round
C4B
– hold two sts on cable needle at the back, knit next 2 sts, then knit 2 from cable needle
T3B – hold 1 purl st on cable needle at the back, knit 2 sts then purl 1 st from cable needle
T3F – hold 2 knit st on cable needle at the front, purl 1 st, then knit 2 sts from cable needle

For heel flap where cable is knitted flat (for 12 rows)
C3B – hold 1 st on cable needle at the back, knit next 2 sts, then knit 1 st from cable needle
C3F – hold 2 knit sts on cable needle at the front, knit next st, then knit 2 sts from cable needle

CO 36 sts and join in the round and place marker

Cuff

K1 tbl, p1 round (twisted rib) for 10 rounds

Purl round for 1 row
As mentioned before there is a rib section between the two panels of cable so first row (and every following row) will go from marker: k1, p2, row of cable pattern (12 sts), p2, k2, p2, row of cable pattern (12sts), p2, k1

Once these 22 rounds are complete, split 18sts from marker and work back and forth for heel flap for 12 rows – in order to give a nice edge to pick up sts, sl first st and ktb last stitch on knit rows as well as slip 1st purlwise on reverse

Turn the heel

K13, turn, purl 8, turn.
Knit 7, ssk, k1, turn
Purl 8 , p2tog, p1, turn
K9, ssk, k1, turn

Continue doing the above until all sts have been processed (i.e. no sts left on the needle when you turn it) – 12sts on needle – these will form the sole of your sock

At this point I like to rearrange my sts so that the 18 sts that form the top of the sock are on one needle (so the cable isn’t split) and I’ve split the heel so that the round starts in the middle of the heel/sole stitches. From now on will refer to top sts (18 that form the 12st cable pattern plus 3 st border either side) and sole sts.

Row 1 Knit 6 sts, pick up 9sts, (you can place marker to delineate the top of the sock at this point), k1, p2, row 1 of the cable pattern, p2, k1, pm, pick up 9 sts down other side and other half of sts (58 sts)
Next round: knit sole sts, row 2 of cable, knit rest of sole sts
Round 3 (start dec shaping): knit until 3 sts before top sts, k2tog, k1 then continue cable across top sts, k1, ssk, knit til last
Round 4: continue cable pattern, decreasing every other row (which should line up with the ‘active’ row in the cable pattern) until you have 16 sole sts
Complete full cable repeat and then the first 12 rows again.

Dec for toe

First round: move start of round to the divide between sole sts and top sts (16 sole sts, 18 top sts)
k1, p1, ssk, k1, p8, k1, k2tog, p1, k1 then knit round (16 sole sts and 16 top sts)
Second round: knit round all sts
Third round: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts on top sts, k2tog, k1 – repeat for sole sts
Repeat these last two rounds until 8sts on top and on sole
Finish with kitchener stitch, sew in ends.
